You don’t need to spend any time in Panama to maintain your residency.

After your initial in-person visit to complete the process, you can leave and return whenever you like. As long as you maintain your residency card and check in at the required intervals, you remain in good standing, even if you never move there full time.

Yes. Panama has a territorial tax system, which means only income earned from within Panama is taxed. If your income comes from outside the country, whether that’s remote work, investments, or Bitcoin, it’s not subject to Panamanian tax.

If you choose to sever ties with your current country of citizenship or tax residency, in most cases, you are no longer obligated to report or pay tax to that country either. There are a few exceptions depending on nationality and how you exit, but in general, second residency in Panama can be a powerful step toward full tax freedom.
